Confession: I watch Revenge.

 Embarrassing? Undoubtedly.

Admittedly, the show went downhill pretty quickly first season, but I still like it, even in all its botoxed, stink-eyed, bad acting, wildly unfeasible glory.

Correction: I liked it.

…And then there was the flashback episode. The dreaded flashback episode that placidly announces the demise of every somewhat promising TV Show. Flashback episodes say one thing to their viewers: Our plot has stagnated so severely that we’re going to give you a patchwork quilt of ridiculously woven, hardly necessary history. We are going to spin a backstory so ludicrous in wild attempt to cling to our rapidly decreasing viewership. If we’ve managed to retain your interest after this, we will know with certainty that our viewers are mentally deficient.

What is the major problem with flashback episodes? I would like you to vote.

  • Is it the botox adult actors inject in order to portray their “twenty somethings” self?
  • Is it the inexpensively cast lookalikes that play the main characters 15 years ago that have zero acting ability whatsoever?
  • Is it the way they try to get all the characters in the same time and place for the sake of the story even though that is completely improbable?
  • Is it the fact that they ALWAYS interrupt an already doomed, yet somewhat intriguing storyline?
  • Is it the glow around the rims of the TV–a television trend that we adopted somewhere around the time of Saved by the Bell and have yet to abandon?

I’m sorry, but every time I sit through half of a flashback episode (or a musical episode) I can’t help notice the shark starting to circle and The Fonzie approaching on a set of waterskis…

    It's the botox. So distracting.

Wow. Now that you mention it, I see the pattern! And it's true! They do distract from the main plot and make it ridiculously like "fate."
